This review is going to be a little different for me. I will just be reviewing this movie, with no previous knowledge of its story, or history. It’s just a different approach for me, and I will see how it goes. it all began, when someone mentioned that Soylent Green was better than Blade Runner, so obviously that got my attention. Soylent Green is a post-apocalyptic thriller, starring Charlton Heston. The Richard Fleischer directed movie has gained a strong cult following over time, and won the Nebula Award for Best Dramatic Presentation and the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film.

It’s a little strange to think people were already beginning to worry about the planet before I was born. Within those forty years, nothing has changed. I soon learn that Soylent Green is the tofu of the future. Most dystopian movies are uninviting, with poor people living in the most unpleasant situations, and Soylent Green is no different. I must say, for a seventies movie, I am highly impressed with the visual effects and tones used during the film. Detective Thorn is a police officer, who is investigating the murder of a man of great importance. Honestly, with the outfit he is wearing he would be better suited to work on a steam train. I am really starting to wonder what soylent green is? The starving community is waiting for its green deliciousness, with a lovely green mist to seal the deal. I do love watching a film set in the future, which is from our past, if that makes any sense to you? Basically, I can see the seventies vibe all over the place.

I have lust learnt that a local thug is buying strawberry jam at one hundred and fifty dollars a jar, that isn’t much different from the current price in England. We also lean that the murder suspect is in fact the CEO of the company that make soylent green. Detective Thorn visits the apartment of the murder victim. His apartment is wonderful, bubble wrap doors and plenty of fake fur, I dig it. I have kind of lost this story a little bit now, but we find the detective in a local market where they are giving out soylent green, and a delicious array of other vibrant coloured blocks. However, they have run out of the green stuff, and I predict a riot. It’s all gone a bit crazy now, and people are being scooped up in garbage trucks and thrown in the back of them. The next scene is brilliant, and the highlight of the film for me. I can’t wait to see what happens next? Detective Thorn’s best friend has gone to the hospital to have himself put to sleep it seems! Furthermore, as he lies in his bed, he gets a cinema experience of a lifetime, before it all went wrong apparently. This brings back memories of when I watched high definition television for the first time. Also, it’s also a stark reminder that this could be the case for us in the future. Detective Thorn decides to go try to find his friend once the terrible deed has been done, only to find that they are also sticking him into the garbage truck as well. Thorn jumps a ride as it goes to a processing plant. Oh! I think I am putting this mystery together now! it’s confirmed, WE are the tofu of the future, we are soylent green. There is a bit of a shoot-out and the detective dies. THE END.
I will admit I have missed a lot of vital information about the film, but I will watch it again. Is it as good as Blade Runner? Well, it’s too early to say after one viewing. Charlton Heston’s clothes are terrible, but there are a lot of moments to enjoy in this film. Apart from that, I need to lie down.
